When starting to learn Arabic, it’s important to build a strong foundation. The first thing you should learn is the Arabic alphabet. Arabic is written from right to left, and the script includes 28 letters, each with different forms depending on its position in a word (beginning, middle, end, or isolated). Familiarising yourself with these letters, their sounds, and how to write them is essential.

Next, focus on basic pronunciation and phonetics. Arabic has sounds that don’t exist in English, such as ‘ع’ (ayn) or ‘ق’ (qaf), so listening and mimicking native speakers is key to developing a natural accent.

Once you are confident with the alphabet and pronunciation, move on to basic vocabulary and phrases. Learn words related to everyday life—greetings, numbers, days of the week, family terms, and common verbs like “go,” “eat,” and “drink.” This gives you a practical set of tools to begin forming simple sentences.

At the same time, start learning basic grammar, including the use of masculine and feminine forms, definite articles (like “al-”), and sentence structure. Arabic is a root-based language, so understanding the concept of triliteral roots will help you recognise patterns and learn vocabulary faster.

Listening and speaking practice should also begin early. Use videos, audio lessons, or language exchange partners to improve your comprehension and speaking skills.

Finally, set clear goals. Are you learning Arabic for travel, religion, business, or exams like GCSE or A-level? Your goals will guide what you prioritise. For example, Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) is good for reading and writing, while a dialect (like Egyptian or Levantine) is better for conversation.

Patience, consistency, and daily exposure are key to success.
