10 Quran tips for learning

Here are 10 Quran tips for learning and memorisation.

1. Cleanliness

Keep your surroundings clean before starting. The Qur’an deserves a clean environment.

2. Promptness

Set a fixed time daily to read or memorise. The Prophet ﷺ said: “The most beloved deeds to Allah are those done regularly, even if small.” (Bukhari & Muslim)

3. Motivation

Remind yourself of the virtues: “The best of you are those who learn the Qur’an and teach it.” (Bukhari) – and of course being able to understand and implement the Qur’an one day.

4. Clear Goals

Set achievable targets—e.g., one or two pages a day, or one surah a week—to track progress.

5. Understand, Not Just Memorise

Read translations and tafseer. Allah says:
“…that they may ponder over its verses…” (Qur’an 38:29). If you’re not able to quote the Qur’an due to lack of understanding then youre not able to feel the and appreciate the verses Allah has revealed.

6. Hadeeths on Learning Qur’an

  • “Whoever reads a letter from the Book of Allah will have a reward, and that reward will be multiplied by ten.” (Tirmidhi)
  • “The one who recites the Qur’an beautifully… will be in the company of noble angels.” (Bukhari & Muslim)

7. Be in Wudhu

Taharah (cleanliness) is a key concept in Islamic circles and fique. Being in wudhu is a highly recommended act for reading Qur’an.

8. Be in Ghusl When Needed

If in a state of major impurity (janabah), perform ghusl before touching or reciting from the mushaf (Qur’an). It is also a good thing to do on Fridays.

9. Show Respect

Do not place the Qur’an on the floor or among clutter. Keep it on a clean, elevated surface, but not so high as to go unoticed and be out of reach. If something is not done intentionally, such as keeping the Qur’an at your feet, then their is no harm although it is better to avoid anything that may be seen as being disrespectful.

10. Do Not Eat and Read

Avoid eating while reciting, as it may distract you and reduce attentiveness. It can also reduce the clarity of reading especially if you are doing this online with a tutor, which is a big no no!

11. Clean Clothing

Wear tidy and modest clothing when reading—it’s an act of worship. Clean clothes does not necessarily mean free from dust or dirt but the clothing should not be impure from najasat, it should also not be usurped.

12. Face the Qibla

Facing the Kaaba while reciting is not a must but what better direction to face when reading the Qur’an than the Qibla.

13. Reduce Sinning

Sins darken the heart and hinder Qur’an retention—seek to purify yourself of listening to too much music. Songs stay in your memory and should not be your default thing to think about. Play as much Qur’an as possible instead of songs.

14. Ask for Forgiveness

Begin and end your Qur’an session with du‘a and istighfar for acceptance. Ask Allah for support with memorising and against major sins.
